Insights into Brain Disorders
Lab of
Stephen M. Smith
Stephen M. Smith is professor of medicine, physiology and pharmacology and CCM fellowship director at Oregon Health & Science University. In addition he is director of Medical Critical Care at VA Portland Health Care System. He obtained his medical degree and PhD at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England. After medical residency in London, he was a registrar in intensive care at Guy’s Hospital and RPAH and RNSH in Sydney Australia. At Stanford University he worked in the laboratories of Richard Tsien and Richard Scheller in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology. He has been at OHSU since 2000 and at VAPORHCS since 2012.
The major theme of our lab is rapid neuronal signaling in the mammalian brain and how this changes in disease states. Focusing mainly on the cerebral cortex, we study regulation of intrinsic excitability and synaptic transmission. A major target is the calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) which has been identified in neuronal somata and terminals.
